　We announce with the greatest sorrow that Professor Kenichi Fukui, the first Director of Institute for Fundamental Chemistry, passed away on January 9, 1998 at his age 79.
　Prof.Fukui was born at Nara in 1918. He graduated from Kyoto University in 　1941. He received the Novel Prize of Chemistry in 1981. He had been the Director of the pesent institute since 1988, when it had been established.
